A Starbucks gift card is one of the most popular gifts for coffee fans — practical, quick to buy and immediately redeemable. But how exactly does it work in Germany? Where do you buy the card, how do you top it up, and what about the Rewards stars? This guide answers the most important questions about Starbucks gift cards and vouchers in Germany.
Buying: Physical Card or Digital Card?
In Germany, Starbucks cards are available as a physical plastic card in the coffee house and as a digital card via the Starbucks app. The physical card is the classic gift: you load it at the till with an amount of your choice and give it away. The digital card is ideal for last-minute gifts or personal use — it is created and managed directly in the app. Important to know: the card only works in participating coffee houses operated by AmRest. Some licensed stores — such as those at train stations and airports like Berlin Zoologischer Garten, Hamburg Hauptbahnhof or Frankfurt Airport — cannot accept the card for legal reasons. So before visiting, it is worth checking which stores participate.
Topping Up and Registering: How It Works
You can top up your Starbucks Card at any time: at the till in participating stores or via the Starbucks app. For online top-ups, the card must be linked to a Starbucks Rewards account. Registration is simple: in the app or online, enter the 16-digit card number and the 8-digit PIN (the PIN is on the back of the card and must be scratched off). A registered card has a major advantage: if it is lost, the balance is protected. After reporting a loss, the remaining balance is frozen and transferred free of charge to a new card — an unregistered card, by contrast, should be treated like cash.
Redeeming and Collecting Rewards Stars
To pay, simply present the card or the barcode in the app — the amount is deducted from the balance. Anyone paying with the card or app automatically collects Rewards stars: 3 stars per euro spent. At 150 stars you get a free drink, and collecting 450 stars within a year earns Gold status with extras such as free syrups and toppings, a birthday drink and free refills on filter coffee or brewed tea. The card itself carries no fees, and unused credit is not charged service fees. In short: top up the card, show it when paying, collect stars — and sooner or later the coffee is free.
Gift Tips and Frequently Asked Questions
As a gift, the card suits almost any occasion — birthdays, Christmas, or simply as a thank-you. One tip: combine the card with a personal message or a favourite-drink recommendation, and the gift immediately feels much more personal. If you are unsure whether the recipient lives near a participating store, check briefly whether their regular store accepts the card. And one more note: credit and stars are tied to the German Rewards programme — different rules may apply in other countries.
